Space-Time Materials: Breitling Launches Navitimer Cosmonaute Artemis II Limited Edition with Meteorite Dial

In 1962, astronaut Scott Carpenter made a request to Breitling: to create a 24-hour Navitimer for his orbital mission aboard Aurora 7, thus giving birth to the first Swiss watch to travel into space. More than sixty years later, the Cosmonaute remains an integral part of space exploration. To pay tribute to its glorious past and look to the future, Breitling presents a new limited edition: the Navitimer B02 Chronograph 41 Cosmonaute Artemis II Limited Edition, featuring a striking galaxy blue meteorite dial. This timepiece captures the essence of space on the wrist, making each dial unique.

For over 70 years, the Navitimer collection has served multiple roles, from an essential tool for pilots to a cultural symbol. This year, Navitimer Stories will tell the legendary story of the Navitimer collection from the perspectives of aviation, lifestyle, and watchmaking craftsmanship, showcasing why this exceptional timepiece remains so significant today.

On May 24, 1962, Mercury 7 astronaut Scott Carpenter wore his custom-made Navitimer watch as he orbited the Earth three times. Carpenter was already familiar with this pilot’s chronograph during his flight training and had great confidence in its circular slide rule calculation function. The version customized to his needs was later named the Navitimer Cosmonaute, featuring a 24-hour display for easy distinction between day and night in space. Following that flight, Breitling officially became the brand that created the first Swiss watch to go into space. The watch’s significance extends far beyond that: even today, astronauts still wear the Cosmonaute during missions.

This limited-edition timepiece pays homage to Carpenter’s historic flight and looks towards the future of space exploration. Limited to 450 pieces, it features a Breitling in-house B02 manual-winding movement and a dial made from a galaxy-blue meteorite cut from outer space. The meteorite, primarily composed of iron and nickel, is etched with a naturally interwoven Weidmann pattern, making each dial unique. The case back is engraved with «Artemis II» and «One of 450» to commemorate modern space exploration. The transparent case back is printed with the Artemis II mission logo.

Breitling CEO Georges Kern stated, “The Astronaut watch was born for space. Incorporating space-age materials into the design embodies that curiosity about the unknown – a curiosity that continues to drive space exploration today.”

A Unique 24-Hour Chronograph

As a true aviation chronograph, the Astronaut watch retains all the iconic elements of this aviation classic: the circular slide rule for calculations, the AOPA winged logo, and the three-register chronograph layout. Its distinctive feature is the 24-hour display, powered by Breitling’s in-house B02 movement. Designed specifically for spaceflight, the dial time is synchronized with mission control time, ensuring clear day and night readings on the sun’s orbit, which rises and sets approximately every 90 minutes.

The watch features classic proportions and a 41mm case, paying homage to the original Astronaut watch. This is also the first Astronaut watch to feature a galaxy blue meteorite dial, paired with a black slide rule, red chronograph seconds hand, and red accents. It comes with a blue alligator leather strap that complements the dial’s color scheme.

A Legend Beyond Earth

While many brands claim to have made milestones in the history of space exploration, only Breitling can truly say that the first Swiss watch worn in orbit was their creation. This was also the first watch specifically designed for spaceflight, and it was later released to the public with the same specifications requested by Carpenter.

The connection between astronaut watches and space didn’t end with the first flight. For decades, Breitling watches have been a staple on the wrists of astronauts and space explorers. John Glenn, the first American to orbit the Earth, wore the Navitimer Cosmonaute ref. 809 in his daily life. James McDivitt, commander of the Gemini 4 and Apollo 9 missions, also chose the Navitimer Cosmonaute Mark 5 as his personal timepiece.

In 1996, Claudie André-Deshays, the first French woman in space, wore an astronaut watch on her left wrist and a Breitling Aerospace multifunction watch on her right during her Soyuz TM-24 mission. In 2022, astronaut Robert Hines wore the Aviation Chronograph B-1 Limited Edition watch during his mission to the International Space Station aboard the Dragon spacecraft. In July 2025, Polish ESA astronaut Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski also wore a 24-hour display aviation chronograph watch during his 20-day spaceflight.

The Aviation Chronograph B02 Chronograph 41 Astronaut Limited Edition is both a tribute and a continuation. This watch, originally designed for astronauts, continues to be trusted by explorers who constantly push the boundaries of Earth.
